Computer Storage: Drives, Capacity, and Removable Media

Internal storage

The internal drive normally holds the operating system, applications, and personal files. SSDs are now the practical default for most computers because they start quickly, respond well, and resist ordinary bumps better than mechanical drives.

A drive advertised as 512 GB will show somewhat less usable capacity after formatting and system files.

External drives

External SSDs are compact and fast. External hard drives can provide more capacity for the price, making them useful for larger backups. Neither should be the only copy of important files.

Eject removable media through the operating system before unplugging when writing may still be in progress.

USB flash drives and memory cards

Flash drives are convenient for transferring modest amounts of data, but their small size makes them easy to lose. Memory cards are common in cameras and some phones. Check the physical format and capacity standard supported by the device.

A flash drive found in public should not be plugged into a computer; it may contain malicious software.

Capacity planning

Documents consume little space compared with photos, video, and games. Check current usage before choosing a new drive. Allow room for growth, operating-system updates, and temporary work files rather than filling the drive immediately.
