Processor and memory

The central processing unit (CPU) carries out instructions. Faster processors help with demanding work, but ordinary browsing and documents rarely require the most expensive model. Random access memory (RAM) holds information that programs are actively using. More RAM helps when many tabs or applications are open.

RAM is temporary: its contents disappear when the computer shuts down. Storage keeps files for the long term.

Storage

A solid-state drive (SSD) stores the operating system, programs, and personal files. It has no moving parts and usually makes a computer feel much faster than an older mechanical hard drive. Capacity is measured in gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB).

Available space matters. A nearly full drive can make updates and file handling difficult, so leave room for system work and future files.

Graphics and connections

The graphics processor creates what appears on the display. Integrated graphics are sufficient for office work, video, and basic photo editing. A separate graphics card is mainly useful for demanding games, 3D work, and some creative applications.

Ports connect peripherals. Common examples include USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, audio, Ethernet, and memory-card slots. The port's shape alone does not always reveal its speed or capabilities.

Cooling, battery, and power

Fans and heat sinks remove heat. Blocked vents can reduce performance and shorten component life. Laptop batteries wear gradually; runtime depends on age, screen brightness, workload, and power settings.

A power supply or laptop charger must provide the correct connection and electrical rating. Use the manufacturer's approved replacement or a reputable compatible unit.
