Recognize social engineering

Warning signs include unexpected urgency, threats, prizes, secret instructions, unusual payment methods, requests for codes, and pressure to bypass normal procedures. A familiar name or logo can be copied.

Verify through a phone number, bookmark, or contact method you already trust—not the one supplied in the suspicious message.

Malware basics

Malware is software intended to harm, spy, disrupt, or steal. It can arrive through fake installers, malicious attachments, compromised websites, pirated software, or exposed systems. Ransomware locks or encrypts data and demands payment.

Keep the operating system, browser, and applications updated. Use built-in or reputable security protection and maintain recoverable backups.

Safer browsing and downloads

Read the domain before signing in or paying. Prefer official app stores and developer websites. Do not install a “security update” offered by an unexpected pop-up. Close the page and update through the application's own menu or system settings.

What to do after a mistake

Disconnect from the network if you suspect active malicious access. Stop communicating with the suspicious party. From a trusted device, change affected passwords, contact the relevant bank or service through an official channel, and record what happened.

Do not keep clicking in hopes of fixing the situation. Professional help may be appropriate when private or financial information is involved.
