Software should come from a known publisher or trusted app store, solve a clear need, and remain supported.

What you will be able to doUse the ideas on this page to complete practical tasks and make safer choices on an everyday computer.

System software and applications

The operating system is system software. Applications are programs used for specific work, such as a browser, word processor, photo editor, game, or accounting package. Drivers help the operating system communicate with hardware such as printers and graphics devices.

Installing safely

Prefer the operating system's app store or the developer's official website. Search advertisements and imitation download buttons can lead to unrelated installers. Read each installation screen and decline optional toolbars, trial products, or changes you did not request.

Administrative permission should be granted only when you understand which program is asking and why.

Updates

Updates may fix security weaknesses, improve stability, or add features. Automatic updates are useful for browsers and many everyday applications. A restart may be required to finish installation.

For critical work software, save files and check release notes or support guidance before a major version change.

Removing programs

Use the operating system's Apps or Applications settings to uninstall software. Deleting a desktop shortcut does not remove the program. Before uninstalling, determine whether the program stores important local data or uses a subscription that must be cancelled separately.
